Balancing evidence and norms in cultural evolution
نویسنده
چکیده
Psychologists have long studied the ways in which individuals draw inferences from evidence in their environment, and the conditions under which individuals forgo or ignore those inferences and instead conform to the choices of their peers. Recently, anthropologists and biologists have given considerable attention to the ways in which these two processes intersect to jointly shape culture. In this paper I extend the BOP (‘‘burden of (social) proof’’; MacCoun, 2012) analysis of ‘‘strength in numbers’’ with a parallel account of ‘‘strength in arguments,’’ and examine ways the two processes might be linked. I compare these models to some leading accounts of individual learning and social transmission, suggesting opportunities for a closer integration of theory and research on cultural evolution across anthropology, biology, and psychology. 2014 Elsevier Inc. On The Genealogy Of Norms: A Case For The Role Of Emotion In Cultural Evolution
_______________________________________________________________________ One promising way to investigate the genealogy of norms is by considering not the origin of norms, but rather, what makes certain norms more likely to prevail. Emotional responses, I maintain, constitute one important set of mechanisms that affects the cultural viability of norms. To corroborate this, I exploit historical e...
متن کاملPareto Optimal Balancing of Four-bar Mechanisms Using Multi-Objective Differential Evolution Algorithm
Four-bar mechanisms are widely used in the industry especially in rotary engines. These mechanisms are usually applied for attaining a special motion duty like path generation; their high speeds in the industry cause an unbalancing problem. Hence, dynamic balancing is essential for their greater efficiency. In this research study, a multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is used for P...
متن کاملThe cultural evolution of age-at-marriage norms
We present an agent-based model designed to study the cultural evolution of age-at-marriage norms. We review theoretical arguments and empirical evidence on the existence of norms proscribing marriage outside of an acceptable age interval. Using a definition of norms as constraints built in agents, we model the transmission of norms, and of mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of norms....
متن کاملGovernance in Health – The Need for Exchange and Evidence; Comment on “Governance, Government, and the Search for New Provider Models”
Governance in health is cited as one of the key factors in balancing the concerns of the government and public sector with the interests of civil society/private players, but often remains poorly described and operationalized. Richard Saltman and Antonio Duran look at two aspects in the search for new provider models in a context of health markets signalling liberalisation: (i) the role of the ...
متن کاملEvolution and Human B Influences on communication about reproduction: the cultural evolution of low fertility
The cultural norms of traditional societies encourage behavior that is consistent with maximizing reproductive success but those of modern post-demographic transition societies do not. Newson et al (2005) proposed that this might be because interaction between kin is relatively less frequent in modern social networks. Assuming that people’s evaluations of reproductive decisions are influenced b...
